Want to learn about ink-and-brush (sumi-e) painting?

Imago Foundation for the Arts (IFA) invites the public to a free ink-and-brush (sumi-e) painting demonstration by IFA exhibiting artist Gary Heise at 1 p.m. Sunday, March 17 at Imago Gallery, 36 Market Street, Warren, RI.

Heise is offering the demonstration in association with the exhibit of his work that will be on display at the gallery March 14 – April 21. The session will also serve as an introduction and sample of a paid two-day workshop he will offer on Sunday, April 21 and Sunday April 28 to those interested in learning more. More details will be announced soon.

Shortly after graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design with a BFA in Painting, Heise studied Chinese brush painting with noted Taiwanese painter and printmaker Liao Shiou-Ping. Since that time, Gary has painted the American landscape using Chinese brush painting techniques and materials, integrating both Chinese and Western approaches to watercolor painting.

Gary and his wife, Janelle, moved to Rhode Island in 2022. Prior to that he served as president and program director for the Asian Brush Artists Guild (est. 1989) associated with the Hammond Museum in North Salem, New York.
