Imago Foundation for the Arts (IFA) is featuring paintings by IFA exhibiting artist Gary Heise, guest artists Kathrine Lovell and Erin Spencer and other IFA exhibiting artists in a group exhibit called “Boundless Worlds” at Imago Gallery, 36 Market Street, Warren, Rhode Island, March 14 – April 21.
A complimentary public reception for all the artists will be held on Saturday, March 16, from 5 to 8 p.m. with musical accompaniment by guitarist by Shelley Katsh. All are welcome.
Heise’s watercolors depict the landscape using Chinese painting materials (ink, brush, and Chinese papers) and a combination of both Eastern and Western painting techniques. His work is inspired by study with the Taiwanese painter and printmaker, Liao Shiou-ping as well as his personal experience of the landscape, and ranges from views of the local landscape to imaginative, semi-abstract scenes.
Heise will be offering a free ink-and-brush (sumi-e) painting demonstration at 1 p.m. Sunday, March 17 at the gallery for those interested in learning more about his work. The session will also serve as an introduction and sample of a paid two-day workshop he will offer on Sunday, April 21 and Sunday April 28. More details will be announced soon.
A painter for many years who worked on acrylics on big panels, Lovell is presenting a new, more intimate series of watercolors. She says, “My ideas, my interests are the same as they have always been–geometric pattern, nature, layered color– but the experience of connecting to my deeper, unconscious creativity has changed every way I work.”
Spencer is a landscape oil painter whose work offers a quiet look at the landscapes that often disappear into the background of our lives. Her paintings have been described as calming and grounding, distilled expressions of poetry. She focused her artwork for this exhibit on clouds and skies and the expression of the boundless energy and wonder she see when looking at the sky.
IFA exhibiting artists who will be participating in this group exhibit include Bill Chisholm, David Clarke, Eileen Siobhan Collins, Mary Dondero, Stephen Fisher, Philip Gruppuso, Carl Keitner, Eileen Mayhew, Linda Megathlin, Catherine Moylan, Rina Naik, Mercedes Nuñez, Anne Marie Rossi, Howard Rotblat-Walker, Duff Schweninger, Pamela Seymour Smith Sharp, Lenny Rumpler, Howard Windham and Meredith Wolf.
Regular gallery hours for the exhibit are Thursday 12-3, Friday and Saturday noon to 6 p.m. and Sunday, noon to 4 p.m.
IFA is a non-profit organization run by artists for artists whose mission is to inspire creativity and promote art-making that enriches our communities.

Imago Foundation for the Arts (IFA) will be offering a two-day workshop on Chinese and Japanese-style ink and brush painting led by IFA exhibiting artist Gary Heise on Sundays, April 21 and 28 at Imago Gallery, 36 Market Street, in Warren, RI.
“A Creative Approach to Chinese/Japanese Ink and Brush Painting” will provide a brief introduction to traditional Chinese brush painting (Japanese sumi- e), and how to use monoprint techniques as a springboard for creative landscape painting on rice paper.
The workshop will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with a short break for lunch on Sundays, April 21 and 28. Heise is a Rhode Island School of Design graduate who has painted the American landscape using Chinese brush painting techniques and materials, integrating both Chinese and Western approaches to watercolor painting for many years.
Artists of all levels and experience are welcome and asked to register in advance at: https://www.imagofoundation4art.org/sumi-eworkshop or stop by the gallery during regular hours to register in person. The fee for the workshop is $90, plus an optional materials fee of $45 for that will cover three brushes, ink, and a set of Marie’s Chinese watercolors.
Additionally, participants may bring in other brushes, watercolors and gouache; newspaper/newsprint, a suitable watercolor palette or dish, and a couple of jars for clean water. Paper for the workshop will be provided to all students for no additional fee.
On Day 1, Heise will demonstrate the practice and the basics of traditional “sumi-e” brushwork – the “bone” stroke and lead basic exercises. The workshop will include demonstrations of basic tree, rock and landscape elements with emphasis on black ink. Black ink — and its gradations–is the foundation of Chinese painting. It is referred to as the bones of the landscape; color is referred to as the skin. Handout reproductions from The Mustard Seed Garden Manual of Painting, originally published in 1679, will be provided as examples to study. Students will practice their own landscape.
Participants will be encouraged to continue their practice during the week at home by copying one of the paintings from the handout, or creating their own composition using what they have learned.
Day 2 of the workshop will reinforce techniques and concepts from the previous week, with an emphasis on compositional aspects, plus the introduction of color. Also covered will be the use of color in painting landscapes. Participants will be creating colorful, abstract compositions in the morning, using crinkled paper and monoprint techniques. In the afternoon, these compositions will be used as the foundation for a contemporary approach to landscape painting.

Gain insights into what makes the author-bookstore and author-library relationship thrive with Faye D’Avanza, a writer-editor and professional librarian who is also the marketing and communications event coordinator at Ink Fish Books.
Bookstores and libraries are a writer’s best friend. But when a writer grows to become a published author, the relationship balance can change from fun-loving customer to awkward sales rep. And this makes sense because writers are taught to write books, not how to sell books. Fortunately, for readers, many authors are eager to learn how to meaningfully connect with bookstores and libraries to promote their book, expand their author brand, and contribute to the growth of more engaged communities.
This is a free creative engagement talk for writers, published authors, supportive friends, and anyone interested in growing and nurturing their relationships in the book world.
