What a week!

Discover Warren volunteers and business owners were hard at work last week, scrambling to find a new location for the Food Truck gathering on the Warren waterfront (at the eleventh hour, we moved from our publicized location at Tourister Mill to the beautiful Burr’s Hill Park) and constructing the 4th of July float to represent our fair town in Bristol’s historic parade. Thanks to everyone who worked hard, played hard, and supported us over this hectic week! Here are some snaps of the festivities, courtesy of photographers Jason Speakman and Josh Bird.

Monday Night is Scrabble Night…

” S M A E W O E ”

What can you spell with those 7 letters?  If you came up with “awesome,” you need to join fellow wordsmiths at the first weekly Scrabble Monday at Simply Devine!  Starting June 25th, folks will be playing Scrabble in the mural room every Monday at 7pm.  The cost is $20 and includes  food, a drink and lots of words with friends.  Please rsvp to 246-2340 or just show up!

Also at Simply Devine, starting next Friday, June 29th, they’ll be launching a summer concert series with Kirk and Kent playing jazz favorites (if you attended the Discover Warren float fundraiser, you’ve heard their musical stylings already).  And on Wednesday nights, starting June 27th, chef Peter is introducing BBQ night with ribs, pulled pork, cornbread, beans and more on the menu (wear cowboy boots or a cowboy hat and get 10% off your meal).

Retail Space!

Just a little something we grabbed off of Craigslist. It’s right next door to Summerwood and The Greenery… anyone need some lovely retail space?

Large open room (24 x 35 feet), private bathroom, additional 9 x 15′ storage area.
All glass front with glass corner window, facing east on Water St.
Wood floors, gas hot water and heat.

Located on the corner of Bowen and Water Street next to Summerwood.

Summer Classes at the Art Spot

There’s still time to sign up for Warren Art Spot‘s awesome summer classes and camps (they start June 18th). Visit their website for more information or take a look at the registration form and class schedule here.

Some classes that caught our eye: a bookmaking workshop on June 19th for ages 10-13; Jim Bush’s “All in the Family” caricature class on June 26th + 27th (ages 9 and up); and “Painting Big!”, a workshop that let’s kids create art on a grand scale (June 27th-29th).

A Weekend of Music

Here’s what up on the local music scene this weekend:

Women of RISA at the Church Street Coffeehouse

The Church Street Coffeehouse closes out it’s tenth season with the “Women of RISA” on Saturday, June 9th at 8pm. This annual event is hosted by Jan Luby and includes: Tracie Potochnik, Katherine Quinn, Carolyn Waters, and Nellie Walcoff. Jan is known for her engaging, often riveting stage-presence as well as her voice full of passion, range and power. Tracie is known for blending simple arrangements with sophisticated lyrical story telling and brings three chords, the truth and occasionally a mandolin to her shows. Katherine brings unique phrasing, quirky word play, and melodic vocals to the stage and is a performer who endears herself to audiences of all ages. Carolyn is a performing singer/songwriter who fuses blues/jazz/roots and other musical genres into unique unforgetable songs and sounds. Nellie draws from the folk, country and popular song traditions, creating an acoustic hydrid that has attracted fans from 16-60.

For more information about this or other up-coming shows, visit us at www.churchstreetcoffeehouse.com  Tickets for this show are $10 at the door and refreshments are available with a small donation. Doors open at 7:30pm.

(The Coffeehouse is located in the lower level of the First United Methodist Church, 25 Church St. Warren. Tickets for these shows are $10 at the door. Coffee, tea and pastries  are available for a small donation. This is an alcohol- and smoke-free venue.)

Open Mic Night at The Coffee Depot

Friday is Open Mic Night, and on 6/8 will feature Truck & Mary Beath. Join us from 7-10pm for great local musicians and delicious drinks.

Local Acts

Warren label 75 Or Less Records will be at Fete tonight (6/7). According to their Facebook page, “Tonight at Fete, General Assembly presents Baylies Band, Olneyville Sound System, and Headless Nixon in the lounge. Cheap cover, cheap drinks, 9pm.” Check out Fete here.

Warrenites Brown Bird are back in town after a three-month tour with Yonder Mountain String Band and Trampled By Turtles. This weekend they are playing shows up north in Biddeford, ME and Peterborough, NH, but you can still support them by buying an LP or CD from The Wooden Midshipman; keep tabs on their tour dates at http://brownbird.net/shows/.

Joe Fletcher & The Wrong Reasons (also now hailing from Warren) head up to NYC this weekend, but save the date for their next local show at The Met: June 16th, with PVD band Deer Tick.

Happy Weekend!
